Magna to Donate $50,000 to 10 Community Groups In Lieu of 2009 Hoedown
AURORA, ON - Tuesday, June 16, 2009 - Magna International Inc. today announced that it will donate $50,000 to ten local charities and community groups in lieu of hosting the 2009 Hoedown.
“Due to the economic downturn, we have decided to postpone this year's Hoedown and hope to be back next year," said Belinda Stronach, Executive Vice-Chairman of Magna International. "At the same time, Magna wants to provide some financial assistance to local charities that have been hard hit by the recession and have to serve more residents with fewer resources.”
The Hoedown started out as a backyard BBQ fundraiser at the Stronach family farm and has raised more than $4 million for local community groups during its 22-year history. The annual event typically attracts more than 350 volunteers and raises money for 15 different community groups each year.
Stronach encouraged residents who usually attend the Hoedown to donate the money they would have spent this year to a local charity. She also encouraged residents to consider becoming involved with Neighbourhood Network, a Magna For Community initiative that provides professional resources and services to not-for-profit organizations and matches volunteers from Newmarket and Aurora with local charities and community groups. Neighbourhood Network currently has more than 1,000 volunteers and over 100 partner organizations.
Charities and community groups interested in applying to become recipients of a $5,000 donation are encouraged to partner with Neighbourhood Network by visiting their website to learn more (www.neighbourhoodnetwork.org). Magna will announce the ten charitable groups that will each receive $5,000 as part of the Neighbourhood Network Community Funding program in late summer.
